HVAC Emergency: Identifying the Severity of an Air Conditioning Issue

Florida summers are known to be scorching. Temperatures can reach 99°F on some days too. Residents are therefore, highly dependent on their air conditioning systems throughout the summer months.

With the air conditioning running for extended periods of time, it’s possible for breakdowns to happen. Getting to the bottom of the issue is essential to help you determine if you should call an AC repair technician.

Here are some of the common causes for air conditioner breakdowns:

Low refrigerant

The refrigerant is a unique liquid present in air conditioning systems. It has the ability to maintain high or low temperatures without changing its state. Over time, air conditioning systems tend to develop refrigerant leaks in the system, which cause your air conditioner to malfunction. Leaks in the coils are repaired by welding or the coils are replaced.

Frozen coils in the system

The evaporator coils are filled with refrigerant and absorb heat from the air which is then cooled. Warm air is necessary for this coil to perform its job. If there’s an issue with the circulation of air and the evaporator coils begins to freeze, your air conditioner will let out warm air.

Dirty condenser coils

The condenser coil is generally part of the outdoor unit and can therefore, get quite dirty. The condenser coils removes warm air from your home and expels it outside. However, when this coil gets covered in dirt, it doesn’t work as well. The air conditioner won’t provide the cooling required and eventually, will lead to a breakdown.

Faulty duct work

The ducts in your home are responsible for transporting cool and hot air around your home. Any issues with the ducts can affect the flow of air around your home. Faulty duct work with leaks will make your home warmer during summer.

If you suspect any leaks in the ductwork, you need a professional to inspect and repair it.

Sensor troubles

Room air conditioners have thermostats  with sensors on them. The sensor is located behind the control panel and it regulates temperature depending on how warm or cool a room has become.

If the sensor moves from its position for any reason, the temperature control will be all over the place. The sensor must be near the coil so that it can gauge the temperature of the air going into the coil. It shouldn’t be touching the coil either.
