Common AC Problems and their Solutions

May 8, 2019

The last thing you want to deal with in the summer is a malfunctioning air conditioner. Air conditioners use up to 6% of all electricity in the US, and a faulty air conditioners account for a large share of it, due to inefficiency.

To make sure that your air conditioner unit keeps working at maximum efficiency and you don’t end up dealing with a malfunction mid-summer, here are some common air conditioner problems you should know:

The AC Doesn’t Work

When your AC unexpectedly shuts down, you’d have to inspect the batteries in the thermostat. Replacing dead batteries can often solve this problem. However, if your batteries are still usable, tweak the settings on the thermostat. If the issue persists and the thermostat isn’t the issue, proceed to checking the AC’s circuit breaker. A mere reboot would solve the issue, if it doesn’t, contact a professional service provider.

A Working AC without Coolness

At times you might experience a sudden drop in air conditioner performance. It might not cool as it did before and the airflow might also be affected.

In most of these cases, a bad air filter is the problem. If cleaning the filter doesn’t help, there might be an issue with the thermostat.

AC produces Loud Noises

Some older ACs might run on belts, and if you hear some sort of squealing noise from the AC, it’s probably the belt and the sound is due to improper alignment, which requires replacement. Similarly, a buzzing sound signals a problem with the AC’s fan. Inspect the AC’s blower as it might need repair.

Water Dripping from the AC

Check the condensate line, which is the PVC pipe that exits from the AC unit. If the pipe is clogged, flush it out.

Frozen coils are another culprit for water dripping from the AC. However, frozen coils also indicate airflow problems due to debris around the AC unit. If you notice any AC component frozen, turn off the power supply and allow the frozen parts to defrost, if the problem persists consider calling a professional.

AC Resets Unusually

Occasionally, your AC might be functioning, but constant power fluctuations can end up being annoying. Fortunately, there’s a remedy for this, as dirty air filters are again the probable culprits. When these filters get dirty, air flow to and from the AC unit is restricted, this causes power fluctuations in the system, resulting in frequent turning on & off of the system. A simple solution would be air filter replacement or vacuuming the dust out of it.
